The Wizard of Oz

Recreating the iconic settings and characters from the 1939 film required meticulous attention to detail to meet both fan expectations and cinematic accuracy. A key design challenge was to interpret a nearly 100 year old I.P. in a contemporary way to entice and entertain a young modern day audience while paying homage to the legacy of the ground breaking film and story. Rather than designing purpose-built spaces, the design team had to retrofit existing indoor and outdoor spaces while creating a meaningful story driven guest flow and themed experience.

Solution

Cutting edge design technology was used to document the existing buildings, interior and exterior spaces in a digital 3D model to allow for precise creative design and engineering. The only design reference on hand was the grainy film footage on CD, so a great deal of creative reimagining and interpretation was necessary to create the immersive experience.

A dedicated team of 95 artists and engineers at Pico Play's fabrication facility in Johor, Malaysia, crafted intricate facades, sculptures, and projections to authentically represent iconic scenes from the film. Utilizing many different materials being, but not limited to, Glass-Reinforced Concrete (GRC), Fire Rated Fibre reinforced polymers (FR FRP), Silicones, Clay, Fire Rated Medium Density Fibreboard (FR MDF) and steel, enabled the creation of sophisticated designs, forms, and textures, ensuring both durability and intricate detailing throughout the precinct.

Results

The precinct extends the film's narrative by incorporating highly detailed life sized characters, audio and video elements, and interactive experiences, ensuring that the storytelling continues throughout the guest's journey.
